Location. Embedded in the side of a steep coastal cliff, Ohtel is a contemporary Wellington, New Zealand hotel adjacent to Waitangi Park and 200 meters from Te Papa Museum and Oriental Bay Beach. The hotel is located in the seaside Oriental Bay neighborhood, eight-and- one-half kilometers from the airport.
Hotel Features. Ohtel, an urban boutique hotel, is a concrete structure housing a collection of furnishings and décor from the 1950s and 1960s. Collected by the owner specifically for the hotel, items include uniquely-shaped but functional clocks and colorful ceramics, cabinetry, lamps, chairs and tables. The café serves contemporary cuisine during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours. Menu offerings include light meals, full meals, an array of desserts and an extensive wine list. The hotel also includes a fitness center, discounted access to a nearby gym and guest laundry facilities. The lobby features a gas fireplace. Wireless Internet access is available in the lobby. The hotel is nonsmoking. Pets are not permitted.
Guestrooms. The four-story hotel's 10 guestrooms are individually decorated in varying color schemes. A focal point is the bathroom: heated marble tile floors, large glass-enclosed two-person bathtubs and oversized showers. Rooms also include pedestal beds, coffee and tea makers, minibars and refrigerators. Rooms also offer complimentary high-speed Internet access and local calls, on-demand digital audio, podcasts and flat-screen LCD TVs with premium channels. Many rooms offer park, marina or harbor views.
Expert Tip. Wellington's Te Papa Museum is one of the largest in the world and houses numerous exhibits and collections. One feature is a simulation designed to take visitors back to New Zealand's prehistoric past. In addition to art, history and environmental exhibits, the museum includes a large collection of Maori artifacts. General admission is free, but fees are charged for tours, other activities and some special exhibitions.
