With its 19th-century charm and ambience, the historic Terraces Hotel Lake Taupo in Taupo, New Zealand, rests peacefully next to the Taupo Hot Springs Spa, known for its mineral-rich natural hot springs. Overlooking Lake Taupo beautified by the distant snow-capped volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park, the resort sits four kilometers from Taupo Airport on Napier-Taupo Highway.
Hotel Features. The Lake Taupo region offers a plethora of outdoor activities for active guests, including trout fishing, jet boating, kayaking, parasailing, mountain biking, hiking and golfing. Guests can also indulge in the cool mountain air at the hotel's Terraces Bar & Café, which features al fresco dining with an impressive wine and beer selection. Also on-site is Cellars Restaurant, which serves exquisite Pacific Rim fusion cuisine with an adjoining Cellars Cocktail Lounge that boasts an extensive wine collection.

Expert Tip. The size of Singapore, Lake Taupo was expanded a few thousand years ago by possibly the largest volcanic eruption of the past 5,000 years. The eruption was strong enough to turn the skies red over Rome and China. Today, the volcano is considered to be dormant, rather than extinct.
